This route description is valid until 31 December 2010

This walk has been established by members of the Ise Valley Vagabonds Walking Club (BWF Club No 70) and is a qualifying event in the IVV award scheme. It can be walked at any time.

Leave the car and head towards the Country Park buildings by turning right on the roadway. Almost immediately, turn left onto the cycleway, and follow it to the road. Cross the road with care, turn left and after 20 metres turn right into the housing estate. Ahead with play area on the right, following path round to the right to the road. Turn left (this is Speke Drive). Go ahead ignoring all turns to T-junction. Turn left and after 30 metres, turn left onto walkway (old railway line). Continue along walkway ignoring all turn offs. Go over the wooden bridge and continue ahead. Look out for old railway gradient arm on the right.

QUESTION 1. WHAT GRADIENT IS IT TO THE TOWN?

Follow footpath round to the right to the road. Cross the road with great care and bear right on footpath to head towards the blue cycleway/footpath sign. Turn left onto the cycleway/footpath and go through the underpass and ahead to steps on the right on front of the Council Offices. Go up the steps to the road bearing right. (Abbey Street). Cross Lodge Road and continue on uphill to the town centre. Turn right into the High Street. After Barclays Bank on the left, turn left up Sheaf Street and pass the Gazebo to the right.

QUESTION 2. ON THE BUILDING OPPOSITE WHEATSHEAF COURT THERE IS A PLAQUE. WHEN DID JOSEPH PRIESTLEY STUDY HERE?

At mini roundabout turn left into New Street and pass Police Station on the right. At the Market Square with the Moot Hall and the Plume of Feathers ahead, turn right and walk towards the Holy Cross Church. Pass the Church on your left and then Tesco car park on the right. Go through metal railings to the road and cross road to small path between the houses. At the next road cross over and continue on the path. Keep ahead on path with back of houses on the left and playing field on right. At road, cross, go through underpass and then go straight ahead on footpath to road.

Cross road and ahead on footpath opposite, turning right at T-junction, past sign for Keys Close into Howe Crescent. Turn left (with Jervis Close 2-14 on wall), then ahead to a flight of STEEP steps. Go up steps and at top, turn left then right to another set of steps up to the road. Cross road and turn right. After 30 metres turn left uphill onto the public footpath. At top of hill turn right through gate to the left of the cattle grid.

QUESTION 3. WHAT IS THE NAME OF THIS HILL?

Then turn around to face the white building. Turn back around with mast to your left and walk slightly to the left of the brick building behind the old wooden information board in centre of field. Pass to the left of the building and pass through gap to the left of the wooden gate. Walk towards the mast. Follow main track past the mast and bench. Stay in this field and bear round to the left. Continue on path with concrete bases mainly to the left and belt of trees to the right, walking all the time in an anticlockwise direction just inside the perimeter fence, keeping to the main path at all times. At red brick buildings on the right and with golf course ahead, bear left onto gravel path. Go ahead with golf course on the right. After 400 metres, with 2 benches on the right, turn right to a large tree and cross the stile. Bear right and go downhill through the trees to the road. Cross and continue down footpath opposite. At Gleneagles Close, turn right in front of houses. At the end, turn left into Sunningdale Drive. At the end, by Wentwoth Close sign, turn right onto cycleway. Turn left after 50 metres, still on cycleway. Cross road to cycleway opposite and go between 4 bollards with pylon to the right. 50 metres after Norton Close, turn right between yellow posts onto cycleway/footpath. Go through the underpass and turn right as you emerge, towards the ‘Visitors’ Centre 1.7km’.

QUESTION 4. IF YOU HAD TURNED LEFT, HOW FAR WOULD IT BE TO THE VISITORS’ CENTRE IN THIS DIRECTION?

After 25 metres bear left between wooden railings and follow the path, the Reservoir Walk, keeping reservoir to your left. Bear left over the weir bridge, reservoir still to the left, until you reach the Daventry Country Park buildings on the right. There are toilets here and a café.

QUESTION 5. JUST AFTER THE VISITORS’ CENTRE THERE IS A TURNING TO THE LEFT. THE RESERVOIR WALK GOES THIS WAY AND WHICH OTHER WALK?

Do not turn left but continue straight on back to the car park.

We hope you have enjoyed the walk!
