This walk has been established by members of the Ise Valley Vagabonds Walking Club (BWF Club No 70) and is a qualifying event in the IVV award scheme. It can be walked at any time.

 

Leave the car park and turn left then left again onto the footpath signposted Nar Valley Way (grassy path) keeping Boal Quay on the right and the car park on the left.

Walk along the unfenced quay and onto the river wall and then follow the cycleway in the direction of South Lynn. Stay on this cycleway, beside the river, bearing right just after the Nar Outfall Sluice, for approximately 500 metres until there is a left turn by

the houses.

 

QUESTION 1. BESIDE THE CYCLEWAY, THERE IS A SCULPTURE. WHAT DOES IT DEPICT?

 

Turn left, to leave the cycleway and go towards the houses, still in the direction of South Lynn. Go through the gate to the road, passing garages on the right. At the end of this road (St Valery Lane), turn left along the main road, Wisbech Road,

passing the Post Office on the left and the Baptist Church on the right. Bear left along Saddlebow Road to a roundabout. Turn left towards the Town Centre, pass

the South Gate, and take the first turning to the left into Southgate Street. As the road bears right, it becomes Friars Street. Turn right into Checker Street. At the main road, turn left and after a few metres, turn left through the arch into South

Everard Street. At the end, turn left into Valingers Road which soon becomes South  Lynn Plain and then turn right along Church Lane into All Saints Churchyard.

 

QUESTION 2. WHAT OUTSTANDING FEATURE DOES THE CHURCH HAVE?

 

Follow the path to the right of the church, pass under the arch of Norris House and continue past the King’s Lynn Youth Centre. Turn left at the main road into London  Road and immediately cross over the road using the pedestrian crossing and turn left

to continue in the same direction. Turn right opposite the Public Library, immediately before County Court Road, and walk down the tree-lined avenue called Broad Walk.

At the stone archway, turn left onto The Walks. At the T-junction, turn right onto St John’s Walk (still in the park). At the road, turn left. Go over the level crossing and turn right onto Sandringham Railway Path.

Take the right fork after about 200m towards Fairstead and follow the cycleway to the left when it leaves the railway by

the footbridge. The cycleway turns to the right, signposted Fairstead ¼ and The Woottons 3. There is a brook on the right. Keep following the cycleway to pass an electricity sub-station on the left. The cycleway eventually bears to the left and then

to the right, to run alongside the edge of the housing estate. Stay on the cycleway. It will soon run alongside a road. Keep following it until the mini roundabout. Stay on the cycleway as it turns right. You are now on Winston Churchill Drive. Just past the

end of Caxton Court, there is a large expanse of grass. Turn left onto the tarmac path and go ahead for 150 metres, to turn right at the bollards. Go ahead to pass a school on the right. At the school gates, keep ahead on school access road and then

cross the road that you come to, and keep straight ahead on the tarmac path on the other side of the road, between the houses. Follow this path without deviation until you come to a road. Turn left. Do not go up the steps in front of you, but turn left

and stay with the road. This road eventually joins the main road. This is Gayton Road. Keep going in the same direction and follow the road for about 1.2km.

 

QUESTION 3. WHOSE CHURCH IS OPPOSITE THE HEALTH CENTRE?

 

Bear left at the first set of traffic lights, straight ahead at the second set and straight ahead again at the third set outside Tesco. Continue towards the Town Centre.

Pass King Edward 7th School on the left. Go straight over the traffic lights by the Woolpack, over the next ones and over the railway bridge. Immediately after the river bridge, at the pedestrian crossing, turn right onto small road/metalled path

(Kettlewell Lane). Turn left in front of Kettlewell House onto the narrower path. Turn left at the pylon. Go ahead along the road, through a small industrial estate. At the end of the road, opposite Lidl, turn right and immediately right again into John

Kennedy Road. Turn left at the traffic lights into North Street.

 

QUESTION 4. WHO OPENED TRUE’S YARD?

 

Turn left into St Ann’s Street and after 100 metres, turn right into St Nicholas Street.

St Nicholas Street leads into Tuesday Market Place. Go around the Tuesday Market Place anti-clockwise passing the Corn Exchange and Barclays Bank, then keep straight ahead into King Street, passing the Old High School, the arch to Aickman’s

Foundry, the Gallery and the Custom House which is now the Tourist Information Centre.

 

 

QUESTION 5. WHEN DOES THE CUSTOM HOUSE DATE FROM?

 

 

Turn right into Purfleet Place and then left at King’s Staithe Square. Pass to the left of the Bank House and turn left into King’s Staithe Lane. At the end, turn right into Queen Street and after about 30m turn right into Three Crowns Yard. Walk ahead to

the quayside and turn left along the quay. Immediately after the college, turn left into College Lane towards the Town House Museum. Look at the Guildhall of St George and King’s Lynn Art Centre in front of you. Turn right into St Margaret’s Place and

continue ahead to the junction with Nelson Street. Turn right into St Margaret’s Lane and go ahead to the quayside. Turn left.

After about 50m (where the road bends to the left) bear left with the road, then immediately right towards Boal Quay to

Return  to the car park.
