This walk has been established by members of the Ise Valley Vagabonds Walking Club (BWF Club No 70) and is a qualifying event in the IVV award scheme. It can be walked at any time. Other places to visit are Rugby School Museum, Gilberts Rugby Football Museum and Rugby Library and Arts Centre.

 

 

From the car park, go back out onto the road, Railway Terrace, and turn right. At the traffic lights, turn right into Church Street. Pass the Squirrel Pub and continue ahead to pass Rugby World Cup information board with Royal Bank of Scotland to the right.

 

QUESTION 1. WHEN DID THE FIRST RUGBY WORLD CUP TAKE PLACE?

 

Turn right at Lloyds TSB Bank into Regents Street. After 20 metres, cross the road at the pedestrian crossing, and turn right to continue down Regent Street. Take the left fork at the small park, pass Rugby Baptist Church on the left, then cross the road

ahead. Turn left, then right, down the path to Park Road. Turn right and at the end of Park Road, turn right along Wood Street.  

At the end of Wood Street, turn left along Railway Terrace following it around to the right where it becomes Station

Approach. At the end of this road, turn left and go under the railway bridge. Follow this road to the T-junction with Boughton

Road and Butlers Leap. Turn left. Soon after crossing the river, turn left into Waterside Drive. Stay on the left hand pavement

to follow the cycleway. At the crossroads of the cycleway, with Tesco supermarket to the right, turn right and continue between black metal posts to where paths divide. Take the right hand path with the green fence on right. At the canal towpath turn left

to go under the road bridge; the canal is now on your right. Pass Oxford Canal Walksign.

 

QUESTION 2. ON THE ‘WELCOME TO RUGBY’ INFORMATION BOARD, JUST BEFORE THE WOODEN FOOTBRIDGE, WHICH RIVERS DOES THE CANAL NETWORK LINK?

 

Continue on the towpath to bridge 51.

 

QUESTION 3. ON BRIDGE 51, WHAT DOES THE BARLEY MOW OFFER MONDAY TO FRIDAY FROM 7.00AM?

 

After the bridge, turn left up the steps to the road. Turn right along the road, over the mini roundabout to a main road, Newbold Crown is on the right. Cross the road into Parkfield Road. Turn left at the wooden fence before the river bridge. Follow

riverside path, with river on the right. (If this path is blocked by roadworks, at the temporary ‘No Through Route’ sign, retrace your steps to the main road and turn right along Newbold Road and go to * on the route desctiption). At the end of the houses on the left, where the school playing field starts, turn left up the bank to go onto a short footpath with a brick wall on the right.                   At the end of this path, go through the kissing gate onto the road. Follow the road around to the right to the main road.

Turn right. This is Newbold Road. * Follow this road passing the schools on the right to a roundabout. Using the pedestrian crossings, turn right to follow road uphill passing Avon Mill Inn on the left then under the railway bridge to turn left into Wood

Street. Cross to the other side of the road and turn right at number 165 into Maple Grove (name at far end). Cross the road into Caldecott Park. After the wooden  kiosk, take the middle of 3 paths, ie second left, towards the bandstand.                                 Exit the park, passing to the right of the bandstand and then the play area, through twin black gates.

 

QUESTION 4. THERE IS A BLUE PLAQUE IN THE FLOWERBED ON THE LEFT. WHAT YEAR WAS THE CENTENARY OF CALDECOTT PARK?

 

Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing with the bingo hall opposite and turn left. Continue towards the Clock Tower, then bear right into Market Place behind the Clock Tower. At the Briggs of Rugby shop, take the right hand fork and then turn right between 2 pubs, Chesters and The Bull into Wooll Street. At the end, cross the road and go ahead to pass the front of Rugby Art Gallery, Museum, Library and Visitor Centre. At the end of it, bear left and go into Percival Guildhouse Garden.

Turn left and exit through the arch into Lawrence Sheriff Street. Continue to the pedestrian crossing. Cross the road and turn left. Turn right onto Barby Road. After 100 metres, just past fancy metal gates, there is an information board.

 

QUESTION 5. IN WHAT YEAR DID LAWRENCE SHERIFF DIE?

 

Turn left into Horton Crescent, follow round to the left then left again passing Rupert Brooke House on the right. At the main road, cross over and turn right then left into Moultrie Road. Continue to the end and turn left, then at the traffic lights, turn right to

return to the car park.
