This route description is valid until 31 December 2008

This walk has been established by members of the Ise Valley Vagabonds Walking Club (BWF Club No 70) and is a qualifying event in the IVV award scheme.  It can be walked at any time.

Leave the car park by walking towards the Racecourse entrance (Warwick Racecourse is one of the leading National Hunt and flat courses and has a regular programme of 23 meetings throughout the year.  The central grandstand incorporates the first stand built in 1809, amongst the oldest surviving in the country.) then turn left to the main road.  Cross straight over into Crompton Street.  At the end turn left along West Street, which becomes High Street and then Jury Street, until you reach the traffic lights.  Turn left along The Butts (care!  There is no pavement on the left-hand side).  Turn left through a wrought iron gate, signed St Mary’s Church, and follow the path into the churchyard.  Go ahead and follow the path round two sides of the churchyard perimeter.  On emerging from the churchyard, go half left into Old Square (having looked inside St Mary’s Church – well worth the effort.  It is famous for its Beauchamp Chapel, Norman Crypt, Mediaeval/Tudor tombs and tower).  Turn left opposite Shire Hall and walk to the right of the Museum into Market Street.  There are toilets opposite the museum.  At the end turn left into Bowling Green Street (no name visible).  At the end of Bowling Green Street, by West Gate, turn left into High Street.  (Yes!  You have been here before).  Cross over the road using the pedestrian crossing and turn right into Castle Street.

QUESTION 1.  WHAT WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1826 AT No 8 CASTLE STREET?

Take the first turning to the left into Castle Lane (no name visible) and after about 50m turn right through the car park gates.  Follow the wall on the right, past Warwick Castle pedestrian entrance and straight on down the path ahead.  At the bottom of the steps, turn left and continue until you have gone under the arch.  Turn right into Mill Street and walk to the end, admiring the houses as you pass them.  This street is one of Warwick’s mediaeval gems.  The Mill Garden at the bottom of Mill Street is a beautiful secluded garden offering spectacular views of the castle and river.  It is open daily from April to October, 9am to 6pm.  There is a small admission charge.

QUESTION 2.  WHAT IS THE NUMBER OF THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT?

Having admired the houses and the view of the Castle, turn around and retrace your steps back to the beginning of Mill Street.  Turn right and use the pedestrian crossing to cross to the other side if the road and continue in the same direction.  After 100m, turn left through the main gates into St Nicholas Park.  Once through the gates, turn right and walk towards the river.  At the river turn left and follow the path to a footbridge and boathouse.  Turn left on the cycle path.  After approximately 200m, turn right onto a footpath and pass through an iron gate to the road.  Follow the road round to the left and ahead as far as the traffic lights.  Turn right onto Emscote Road and pass under a railway bridge.

QUESTION 3.  WHAT IS No 31 EMSCOTE ROAD?

Continue over a canal ridge, and eventually cross the road using the crossing near the post box.  Continue in the same direction as before going over a river bridge.  About 100m past the river bridge, turn left into Rock Mill Lane.  Bear right onto the footpath to the right of Rock Cottage and follow this path uphill.  Do NOT bear right up steps.  After passing through a children’s playground, keep left on the grass with houses on the right.  After second children’s playground, cross a small bridge over a small stream, go up the steps and bear left.  Follow this field path, keeping left at all junctions so that you stay close to the river.  Eventually there is a bridge on your left (after passing some ruins on the far side of the river).  Turn left through the kissing gate to cross 2  bridges, then pass the restaurant by going through the terrace and car park to the road.  Turn left and to follow the road back into Warwick town.

QUESTION 4.  ON THE WARWICK TOWN SIGN, IT SHOWS THAT WARWICK IS TWINNED WITH 2 TOWNS.  NAME ONE OF THEM.

Keep straight on over a roundabout (follow Town Centre direction) to the canal.  Turn right onto the towpath and follow it for 900m until you reach the second footbridge over the canal (there is also a lock).  Cross over the footbridge by going 20m past it and double back through the gap to the right.  Follow the path onto the lane (no name visible until you reach the far end – it is Lock Lane).  Turn right onto Millers Road (no name visible yet again).  At the T-junction (the Jolly Miller pub is on your right), turn left into Cape Road and follow it over the railway bridge.  Cross to the right hand side as soon as it is safe to do so.  At the end of Cape Road, bear right into Barrack Street, walk past the Library and bear right to the T-junction, turn immediately left into Theatre Street (which becomes Bowling Green Street).  Turn right into Friars Street, soon to pass the New Life church on the right.

QUESTION 5.  FURTHER ON THERE IS ANOTHER CHURCH ON THE RIGHT.  WHAT IS THE NAME OF THIS CHURCH?

After the church, turn right into Bread & Meat Close towards the Racecourse entrance and then immediately right again back to St Mary’s Lands car park.

We hope you have enjoyed the walk!
